Department of Radiology & Imaging

Introduction

Radiology and Imaging is the public health profession concerned with the direct administration of radiation, primarily X-rays, in disease diagnosis and injury assessment .Medical imaging studies have been a cornerstone in medical diagnosis for decades; however, technological advances and the addition of new imaging modalities now place medical imaging among the most dynamic, expanding and high demand fields in clinical medicine. Nowadays, it has evolved and advanced in such a way that it has become an indispensable component of health care. It deals with acquisition, viewing and interpretation of images for diagnosis of diseases. It also provides image guided minimally invasive therapeutic and diagnostic procedures. It is now the key diagnostic tool for many diseases and has an important role in monitoring treatment and predicting outcome. Hence it has become an integral part of a modern health care facility. From its inception in 1964, the department of radiology & imaging of Rajshahi Medical College continues to play an important role in patient care as well as academic and research activities.  We offer diagnostic radiology and image-guided interventional services to patients and medical education and training of undergraduate and postgraduate medical students and technologists.

Mission

  1. To provide high quality radiological services.
  2. To educate undergraduate and postgraduate medical students and technologists.

Vision

To be a center of excellence for radiological services and radiology education and research.

History

Rajshahi Medical College Hospital was established in 1958. Department of Radiology and Imaging  in this hospital started its journey in 1964 with a conventional X-ray machine. Since then, this department is continually providing service to the patients with its limited resources.

Today, we have all major radiological modalities here & we aspire to become a leading radiology department in the future .

Location and Physical Structure

The Department of Radiology & Imaging is located in the ground floor as a part of outdoor complex of Rajshahi Medical College & Hospital and is open round the clock throughout the year. It has four X-ray rooms, one portable X-ray unit, three ultrasonography rooms, one CT scan room, two MRI rooms, one mammography room. The Department has a well equipped multimedia class/seminar room, a reporting room and mini library.

Equipments

Over last fifteen years, this department has grown tremendously and at present has been equipped with various modern equipments e.g. four 500 mA digital x-ray units, one 300 mA portable x-ray unit, one mammography unit, four ultrasound units with color Doppler, one 64 slice  multidetector spiral CT scanner and one 0.3 Tesla and one 1.5 Tesla MRI units.

Administrative Structure

The Head of the Department provides leadership in all aspects of Department affairs; he is ultimately accountable to the principal of the institute.

Clinical services

This department is dedicated to ensure 24-hour services to both indoor and outdoor patients. It is one of the busiest departments of this institution. More than 100000 imaging examinations are performed annually including MRI, CT, ultrasound, conventional radiography and mammography.

Interventional Services

Interventional procedures including image-guided fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC), biopsy and aspirations are routinely done here.

Activities

Educational activities

Regular lectures, seminars, workshops and case presentations are arranged for the trainee doctors & palced students. We also provide radiology training for MBBS, FCPS (Radiology and Imaging) and medical technology (Radiology) students. As part of their curriculum, postgraduate students from various other departments of this college are also trained in Radiology and Imaging during their rotations in this department.

Research activities

Faculty members actively participate in research work. They have many publications in reputed national and international journals. Postgraduate students & trainees of Radiology and Imaging do their research work under the supervision of the faculty members.

Academic activity

  • 5th year MBBS class, 10 lecture per year
  • 3rd year and 4th year students are placed
  • Postgraduate students from RMC
  • Students from Institute of Health Technology for internship and honorary training.
  • Daily class for the trainee Doctors.
  • Weekly CME.
  • Journal club session.
  • Central presentation in Gallery.
  • Some research work is running by students of different institutions.

Facilities

  • Reporting room
  • Mini Library
  • Class room/Conference room
  • Doctors Room

Extra Academic Activities

  • Observation of World Radiography Day- 8th
  • Different national & internationally observed days.
  • Cultural programs, annual picnic.
  • Bangla New year, Autumn, Spring celebration.

Present Challenges
Though significant development has taken place during last ten years, overall standard of service of this department still lags behind the Radiology departments of the developed world.

Rajshahi Medical College is one of the largest and busiest tertiary level hospital in Bangladesh and a referral center for many patients in the northern part of the country. As a result, the workload of this Department is very high. So more infrastructure (e.g. patients’ waiting and washroom facilities, doctors’ room etc), more machines and manpower are necessary according to the workload. More female technologists should be posted here for mammography and imaging of female patients.

A well- equipped reporting room with digital view box, CT and MRI console is urgently needed. Radiology reports are still delivered hand written in this department. For computerization of the reporting, sufficient number of computer operators as well as computers and printers are needed. An information desk and report delivery room should be established staffed with sufficient number of employees for prevention of harassment of the patients and prompt delivery of reports.

A well-equipped library/reading room is needed for students with sufficient number of books and journals.
For full implementation of subspecialty divisions of Neuroradiology, Pediatric Radiology, Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiology, sufficient infrastructure should be allotted. Faculty members should be sent abroad for training to develop subspecialty expertise. Technologists should also be trained in recent protocols.

Radiation protection is vital for patients as well as for radiologists and staffs. Regular radiation monitoring should be done by a radiation physicist. Radiation dosimetry badge should be available to every staff and residents of this department free of cost.

Future plans
Our dream of the future is to get a fully equipped modern department so that every patient can get high quality radiological services and our students get education and training of high standard. We hope for the installation of following machines at this department in the near future.

  1. Successful establishment of JICA funded ongoing project of modern diagnostic & imaging centers in eight divisions of the country.
  2. 3T MRI for better resolution, functional and perfusion imaging.
  3. Picture archiving and communication system (PACS) for economical storage and convenient transmission of images to different departments and to develop an archive for students.
  4. Intervention room & post procedure ward.
  5. Positron Emission Tomography (PET) for diagnosis and follow-up of cancer patients.
