Department of Dental Pharmacology

Introduction

The Department of Dental Pharmacology is dedicated to providing comprehensive knowledge of pharmacological principles relevant to modern dental practice. The department plays a vital role in building a strong foundation in drug science for undergraduate dental students, integrating basic pharmacology with clinical dentistry to ensure safe, rational, and evidence-based patient care.

Our curriculum emphasizes the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of drugs commonly used in dentistry, including local anesthetics, analgesics, antibiotics, anti-inflammatory agents, and emergency medications. Special focus is given to prescription writing, adverse drug reactions, drug interactions, antimicrobial stewardship, and safe medication practices in medically compromised patients.

Through interactive lectures, problem-based learning, case discussions, and practical demonstrations, the department encourages critical thinking and clinical decision-making skills. Students are trained to apply pharmacological knowledge in real-life dental scenarios, including pain management, infection control, management of medical emergencies, and care of special patient groups such as pregnant women, elderly patients, and individuals with systemic diseases.

The department is also committed to promoting research awareness and rational drug use in dentistry. By fostering ethical prescribing habits and evidence-based practice, we aim to produce competent dental graduates who prioritize patient safety and therapeutic effectiveness.
