Introduction
The Department of Paediatrics of Rajshahi Medical College is one of the ancient and esteemed department started its functioning six years after the establishment of the medical college in 1963. This department had launched its journey by the renowned National Professor M R Khan. It was situated in the 2nd floor of the last building occupying an estimated floor space of about 3000 square feet. Initially is had only one unit. The functioning components of the department of pediatrics are distributed into academic activities.
It has been rendering its academic program to under graduate MBBS student of 3rd & 5th year from the very beginning. Every year 200 MBBS students are enrolled in this medical college. In 1994, the department has started its postgraduate degree program with Diploma in Child Health (DCH) and till to date 70 medical graduate have successfully been awarded the DCH degree under the University of Rajshahi and BSMMU.
In 2003, Doctor of Medicine (MD) in Pediatrics program has been started and by July, 2018 session, 32 doctors have obtained their MD degree in pediatrics under the University of Rajshahi and BSMMU, Currently, there are 11 postgraduate students enrolled in DCH course, Father, Pediatrics is being taught as a compulsory subject in different parts of all other MD/MS courses of this Institute. Besides degree program, the department paediatrics has been catering for postgraduate training facilities of doctors interested in career in pediatrics and for students of Pharmedic, Physiotherapy, Different typs of nursing training.
The department has 3 pediatrics unit, I neonatal ward, Nephrology Corner, Leukaemia corner, Malnu- trition Block, Isolation Room, Diarrhoea Block, Procedure room, Tutorial class rooms, Library room, rooms for the academic and Technical staffs. Over the period, department of Paediatrics has grown steadily and contributing enormously not only for the production of young brilliant medical graduates, specialist in pediatrics. Future plan of expansion in the Isolate Special care newborn unit and NICU, PICU and also research areas of the department.
