Department of Orthopedics

Introduction

The department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital was established in 1970 and has been serving the people of northern region of Bangladesh with dedication and excellence for more than five decades. Since its inception the department has played a vital role in providing comprehensive orthopaedic care to a large population including trauma management, congenital deformities, degenerative conditions, infections, tumours and complex reconstructive procedure. Being one of the major tertiary care centre in the northern part of the country it receives a high volume of referral cases from the surrounding districts.

Over the years the department has expanded its scope with multiple subspecialty units, including

  • General orthopaedics and trauma surgery : We provide comprehensive trauma care and fracture management. SIGN Project is running here since 2003. Rajshahi Medical College Hospital becomes 10th among 457 centres in 60 countries of the world.
  • Hand and micro surgery: Management of complex hand injuries, nerve injuries, tendon repairs and reconstructive micro surgical procedure.
  • Paediatric orthopaedics: Treatment of congenital deformities, developmental disorder and trauma in children.
  • Spine surgery : Management of degenerative spine disease, spinal trauma, infections and deformities.
  • Ilizarov and deformity correction: Limb reconstruction, lengthening procedure and correction of complex deformities using Ilizarov technique.

Activities

The department is actively involved in undergraduate and postgraduate medical education.

  • MBBS for undergraduate medical students
  • Ortho (Diploma in Orthopaedics) for postgraduate students

Through structured academic programs regular clinical classes. seminars, journal clubs and operative training the department significantly contributes skilled orthopaedic surgeons for the nation.

 

Daily Academic activities:

For MBBS class :

Regular lecture classes : As per BMDC Curriculum 45 lecture classes for Phase-IV and 15 classes for Phase-III

Clinical Classes in the ward: 4weeks (96hrs)

Patient based learning (PBL) : 4weeks (48hrs)

For D. Ortho class

  • Weekly lecture class: 4
  • Weekly Tutorial class : 3
  • Weekly clinical class : 6
  • Weekly Journal club : 1

Case Presentation:

Pre & post operative cases are presented and discussed elaborately in every Sunday & Tuesday. All difficult problematic and complicated cases are discussed in medical board held in every Sunday.

  • Death Review : After each death

Scientific Activities:

Department arranges scientific seminar one in every month- additionally in every week there is a session for Journal Presentation

 

 

 

Surgical Procedure:

In Orthopaedic Department daily approximately 25 emergency operations are done and in schedule operation approximately 30 operations are done in every week.

Unit-I : Unit Chief : Prof. Dr. Mohd. Alamgir Hossain, Professor & Head. Admission day : Saturday, Monday ,Wednesday and alternate Friday. Schedule OT : Monday & Thursday.

Unit-II : Unit Chief : Dr. Subrata Kumar Pramanik, Associate Professor. Admission day : Sunday, Tuesday ,Thursday and alternate Friday. Schedule OT : Saturday & Wednesday.

Average patient per admission day : 40. Emergency operation : Performed round the clock 7days in 3 operation table.

Ward -1 (Female & paediatric) : 50beds ( Paying beds- 6, Non paying beds- 44)

Ward – 31 A (Male) : 47 ( Paying beds- 7, Non paying beds- 40)

Ward – 31 (Male) : 50 (Paying beds-7, Non paying beds- 43)

OPD:

Dr. Suman Paul (D. Ortho), Junior Consultant posted as Residential Surgeon ( Ortho). Out patients are seen by two Medical Officer and RS (Ortho) at OPD. Plaster room and dressing room are available in OPD.
